Young Eagles: Youth Flight Plan

Five Steps to Youth Engagement in Aviation

Parents/Guardians: Don't forget to sign the form!

From introductory flights and educational camps to financial aid and internship opportunities, EAA empowers young people with resources to become part of the next generation of aviators.

Take the first steps to making your dream of flying come true. See and experience what pilots do on the ground and in the air with a free Young Eagles introductory flight!  Your Young Eagles flight will last approximately 20 minutes and you will see the earth and sky in a new and exciting way.

This is your chance to experience the freedom of flight that many people only dream about.  Many remember this experience for the rest of their lives!

  1. On the ground: Your pilot explains what will happen during the flight. You may talk about the airplane, review an aeronautical chart (or map), and complete a careful “walk-around” preflight inspection of the airplane.

  2. Just before takeoff: Your pilot explains the interior of the airplane, including the operation of the aircraft door, safety belts, and instrument panel.

  3. In the air: The flight lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. And, if you want, your pilot may let you take the controls!

  4. Back on the ground: There’s more time for you to ask questions about the flight. Your pilot is happy to tell you more about flying and their particular airplane.

As an EAA Student Member, you’ll receive free access to Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course ($249.00 value).  The course is recommended for ages 13 and up.  This interactive online course uses real-world video and incredible 3D animations to help you learn the basics of flight. After you complete the first three volumes of the course, you’ll receive a Free First Flight Lesson, and EAA will reimburse the cost of the FAA written exam ($150 value).

The Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course is a comprehensive online ground school, test prep and flight training companion designed to make your lessons more efficient, more complete and more fun.  The course focuses on learning to fly, not just memorizing test questions. The course is so complete that the FAA accepted it for use in approved flight schools.

See real-world video: Sporty’s puts you in the cockpit for a “pilot’s-eye-view” of everything you’ll see during your flight lessons. Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course lets you decide which pilot certificate works best for you - Sport, Recreational, or Private.

How do I sign up?  Inside the logbook you received from your Young Eagles pilot is an access code for your free EAA Student Membership. Once you sign up, register for Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course at the same time.  Sporty’s will e-mail you directly with your username and password. If you are already an EAA student member and need access, just call 800-843-3612 to get started.

What if I don’t have an access code?  You can register for your free EAA Student Membership even if you didn’t receive an access code from your pilot. All you need to do is answer a few questions about your flight so your status can be verified.

When can I begin my course? Sporty’s will send you an e-mail with your username and password. Once you receive that you can begin the course.

Step 4: First Flight Lesson

After completing the first three volumes of the Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course, you’ll qualify for a free first flight lesson at a flight school of your choice ($120 value).   This step is easy - EAA will contact you as soon as you qualify for your free lesson!

How do I qualify? To be eligible for the free flight lesson, you must have taken a Young Eagles flight, completed the first three volumes of the Sporty’s course, and be at least 13 years of age.

OK, so I qualify, now what? EAA will e-mail you a form for your parents to sign. Once EAA receives the completed form, you will be sent a flight lesson voucher with instructions on how to redeem it.

How do I find a flight school?  Search for flight school in your area.

Is there an age requirement for my flight lesson? Yes, you must be between the ages of 13 and 19.

Can I give my voucher certificate to someone else? No. The voucher is only valid for the Young Eagle listed on the voucher certificate.

What should I do after my first flight lesson? You are encouraged to sign up for more flight lessons and work toward earning a pilot certificate!

Step 5: Flight Training Scholarships

There’s help out there to support your aviation dreams!

You have access to flight training and college scholarships through EAA, including the EAA Air Academy.
