May Meeting
The next meeting will be held Wednesday, May 24th at 7:30 PM in McElmurry Hall.
The program for this month’s meeting was not available at press time. See you there.
From the Left Seat
By
the time you read this, the Mid-Atlantic Fly-in will have come and
gone. I hope to report that the tie down business we voted to take on
went well. I am a little distressed that while so many members voted to
obligate our chapter for this event, so few are stepping up to the
plate and participating. Janet and I, Frank and Earl seem to be it. The
future of our chapter is in doubt if we can't get anyone to
participate. The same applies to Young Eagles. The same few show up
month after month. I am at a loss to explain the lack of participation.
We have relatively good attendance at the meetings, which, even being
kind, can hardly be called exciting. If anyone has any ideas for
improving participation, please let me know.
I
have received a lot of feedback concerning the disposition of our RV8A
kit. Everyone I have heard from wants to offer it to a chapter member
first before putting it on the market. A new RV8 quick build kit costs
about 30K including freight. Ours is nearly complete with good
workmanship. If anyone in the chapter is interested please let me know.
I have been approached by a member in the VNC chapter who is interested.
On the legal front, no news.
June
10th, the new chapter at Airport Manatee is hosting the Florida Wing of
Van's Air force for a cookout. This is open to everyone. Cost will be a
$5 donation. Please show up and support our fellow airplane builders.

Minutes of the April Meeting
Vice President Chip Miller opened the meeting at 7:32pm with the 'Pledge to the Flag'. 22 members and guests were present.
Chip
reported the contents of Dave Bothe's hangar have been removed. His
wife Pam has donated Dave's RV-8A kit to the chapter for helping out.
Chapter Officers and directors were introduced to the group.
Young Eagles: Frank Szachta announced our chapter has now flown over 2000 Young Eagles since the start of the program in 1993.
Secretary's Report: The minutes of the March meeting were accepted as printed online at the chapter's website.
Treasurer's Report: No report was given.
Tool
Committee: It was reported 1 tool has been overdue by three days. There
was a discussion as to who owns the pneumatic dimpler that is in the
tool inventory. It was agreed to check with Frank Hurlburt to see if
the chapter bought it or not. Lyman Bower offered a brake for the
chapter to use.
New Business: John Stevenson gave his views of the recent acquisition of Dave's RV-8A kit. He feels that completion by the chapter
would cost a minimum of $15,000 on up. A second option would be for a
member to purchase the kit from the chapter. Another possibility would
be to sell the kit to an outside party. John has offered to store the
kit until the chapter has explored all possibilities.
Chip
reminded the group of the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Fly-in in May. The
chapter will be selling/renting tie-downs during the event. Blaise
would like at least 20 members to help out. Chip also brought up the
possibility of a chapter cookout. The details need to be worked out.
A
break was taken for refreshments, brought this month by Vance Noles. A
50/50 drawing followed, which was won by Lyman Bower. He donated $13.00
back to the chapter.
Chip closed the meeting at 8:57pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Rolf Bostrom, Secretary

Greetings to all,
For
those who were not able to attend our April meeting, we were shy of a
quorum. Pres. Blaise and treas. Frank were also unable to attend. We
were able to discuss the Young Eagles program, the Lumberton Fly-In,
some tool room issues, and we brought up the topic of having a chapter
picnic. No date was decided. Think about it and we'll come up with a
date that works for the most people.
Any members who haven't paid their 2006 dues, please do so as soon as possible and we'll firm up the '06 roster.
We
have lots to do this year. As you know from the last newsletter, our
chapter now owns Dave's RV8A kit. Thanks to Pam for that generous
donation. Obviously there are many decisions we will need to make. The
Sun n Fun issue is coming to the forefront and we need the strength and
support of all of our membership.
Tom
Sell will be heading up the Young Eagles program so bring your airplane
and come out on the 3rd Saturday from 9-3. We always need lots of
ground crew, too. Congratulations to newlyweds Tom and Linda Sell! What
a beautiful bride and lovely beach wedding!
I
will be out of town for the May monthly meeting and YE. Bring your $25
to treas. Frank and re-up for 2006. Our members are also our friends.
Talk to a friend.
Fly safely,
Chip
180 Tool Library Rules
Below are the current rules for borrowing tools from EAA Chapter 180's Tool Lending Library.
It
should be noted that they are changed from the rules formerly in force.
I have removed the provision for a tool to be returned for inspection
after a renewal period. Since I am personally keeping track of renewals
and overdue tools, the requirement for a borrower who is otherwise
abiding by the rules to return a tool for inspection is a needless
hassle for everyone concerned.
It
should also be noted that tools must be reserved or renewed with the
Tool Committee Chairman. A simple phone call or e-mail is sufficient.
It makes my keeping track of the inventory much simpler. A tool should
not be renewed with another Tool Committee member, who would have no way of knowing whether the tool has been reserved.

EAA Chapter 180 Tool Use Rules
The
borrower must be and remain a dues-paying member in good standing of
EAA Chapter 180 in order to have a tool on loan from the Chapter.
The
first month’s use of the tool is free. If the borrower is not finished
with the tool at the end of the first month and no other member has
reserved the tool, its use may be continued free for a second month if
the borrower informs the Tool Committee Chairman that he wishes to
renew the loan of the tool. If the loan of a tool has expired, the
borrower will be charged at the rate of $5.00 per week until the tool
is returned. A loan expires at the end of the first month, or at the
end of the renewal month.
The
borrower agrees to use and maintain the tool in accordance with the
manufacturer’s instructions, if available. Liability for damage caused
by ignorance or willful misuse will rest with the borrower.
If
the tool is lost or damaged beyond repair, the borrower will reimburse
the Chapter for its expenses in replacing the tool. If the tool is
damaged but repairable, the borrower will reimburse the Chapter for the
cost of the repair.
The tool must be signed out and in by a member of the tool committee.
With
regard to assessed late fees or charges for replacement or repairs, the
borrower agrees that any decision of the Tool Committee will be final.
